Reply:Sorry guy but got some news for you.. most of those sites are basically scams to get guys to sign up. Ever notice the imbalance of guys to girls. I'll be honest and say that your would be better off taking that 400 bucks a month and joining a club or going to concerts or anything of YOUR interest that would have women there also and talk to them. You already have a common interest so it shouldn't be hard to find something to talk about.

I am a man and am back on the market again after a tough breakup. I have never used online dating services before but I am thinking about it now because I am in a new area and don't know many people. Reply:It can work, it really depends on the person and the people they are seeking. Why not give it a try. Going to the bar is bad place to meet people. At the bar you know nothing about the person, at least with the dating websites you have to post your info. That way you can select the person you may want to meet.

I haven't found anyone I'd be willing to have a releationship with (well, one woman was a "possible", but we only dated for a couple months).

Reply:Do not...I repeat DO NOT go thru yahoo...I signed up thru them for the free trial and then I cancelled like 2 days later...all of a sudden like 3 months later, I happened to look at one of my credit card statements and saw that I was being charged for yahoo personals. I was highly upset and when I contacted yahoo personals, they refused to refund any of my money. They told me that when I cancelled my subscription, all I really did was delete it, but didn't cancel it. I told them I went thru their directions of cancelling it as stated on the website. Everytime I asked to speak with a supervisor regarding this...they were always in a meeting. So I highly suggest you find someone else to go thru. Do not use yahoo personals.

She also met a few scary freaks in the process, including one that somehow found out where she lived and where she worked, and he started stalking her.

I used a service called Equally Yoked, met a few really nice guys but it felt more like shopping than anything. My suggestion, don't date! Focus on making a big group of new friends...you'll eventially meet their sisters and their friends sisters,,,that's the best way I've found to meet people and really get to know them.

Reply:Yes! My roommate just got married to a girl he met through online dating. In fact, I believe (especially in US) that the current statistics are very high - it is an accepted way of life out there.

Sure, it might not seem as romantic and incidental as other types of introduction but the world is a changing place and it is not like it used to be.

I have done it off and on for years, and funny thing I will go online and browse profiles on both Match and Yahoo and I see the same guys on there I did years ago, so it's definitley not working for them. I have probably met 20+ guys from online and only two of them were even worth seeing a second time. With all that said, I guess it's worth a try, ya never know, it might work for you. You can meet a weirdo in a bar, at a coffee shop, anywhere.......and people can also lie to your face just like they can lie on a dating profile. Try out several different sites and see which one you like.....I ended up finding my sweetie on a local dating site for our city which was sponsored by the news paper for the area, plus they had singles activities around the area. I had tried a couple of the big name sites also. You really have nothing to lose by trying it out.

O.k....I was married for l o n g while...now peacefully divorced and have been 'in' the dating 'scene' for about 2 yrs now. Have experienced online dating, a dating 'club' / organization, and by chance (in public) meeting. Which do you prefer to opening yourself to for meeting someone . . . through on line search, or to meet someone by chance as you're 'out there' in the world at work, attending an event, brousing a bookstore etc. Which is your preferred style and why? I have my preference and for my own specific reasons...wondering your's.

In my head, I think meeting by chance is the best way... but unfortunately, in this day and age, that just doesn't happen... I live in NYC and everyone is so trained not to make eye contact with anyone or to talk to strangers (only because there are so many weird people here...you learn fast not to talk to anyone!). I've met a few guys online and they were all perfectly nice guys. One I had an instant attraction/connection with, but the timing was wrong. The other 2 I just didn't feel that "zing". I think it's easier to feel that "zing" of attracting in person so that is why I prefer it. It has nothing to do with looks, but more of an instant connection that sometimes happens (and in my mind, is very important for a relationship).

Online Dating, Break Up... Stalking?!?

Hello everyone.

I have a bit of a problem.

I am 17 years old, and have been online seeing a 19 year old boy for the past few months. We have recently broken up because of his being overly controlling, possessive, and especially angry, individual. (signs only showed up after dating and I felt it was just a rough patch, but that seems to be his personality and it never went away. causing me much anxiety and unneeded stress)

So I have broke things up. He of course has my address, since we would write to each other. I live in Canada, and he lives in the USA.

* He is a very angry person, and obsessive with me, to the point he stalks many of the places I go online.. which makes me feel paranoid. I have told him this.

The worry I have is that now, after breaking up, with his personality traits in mind.. I fear that he might want to hurt me or my family out of anger (he has my address and telephone number.)

I've alsogone out of my way to make sure that all my accounts online were deleted

The first and last thing you need to do is defuse the situation.

Do not fuel his obsession. If you haven't done it already, tell him you are cutting off all communication, and if he tries to get in contact with you again, you will call the police. Then don't make any kind of contact with him again, no matter how crude or obsessive he gets. If you even email him or IM him or whatever, you have given him fuel to get respond. Even using this medium is in-directly talking to him. Does he know your avatar and username? Will he be reading this question? If so, you will be fueling him.

You have to not have any kind of contact with him. Don't do it. No matter what. He'll finally get bored and move on. This happens in about 88% of cases.

For the rare 12%, it could turn dangerous. Tell everyone you know about the situation, parents etc. and if he shows up at your home, then he has taken it up a notch and its now time to go to the authorities.

Don't worry about hurting his feelings, people that have anger issues often use this to their advantage and will make you feel bad in order to get the upper hand. They will also use conflict, because most of us try to avoid any conflict.

I met this guy via online dating and he's asked me out to a new restaurant that is located in New Harlem, called The Den. Anyone been to this place? Do you think this is an okay place for a date, be as though I've met him through online or should it be more of a coffee house meet and greet? All advice and comments appreciated. By the way, neither of us live in NY, it was just a mutual agreement to meet there since he stays there occassionally for work.

There is nothing wrong with online dating, but it is always important to be somewhat careful. There are people out there that are not exactly friendly, as we should all know. Online dating dilemma?

A few months ago I joined an online dating site. I have met up with this guy twice, and were planning to meet again. We had spoken for months on MSN before we finally met.

I haven't told my family about him because its early days. This guy has told his folks about me but lied and told them we met in a bar.

Now its my turn to tell my parents but I do not wish to lie to them because if we ever got into a relationship, I know the truth will come out me met online. I really like him but I dont wish to start anything based on a lie.

Should I tell my my parents my own lie, as If i tell them the truth im sure they'd disprove. Or discontinue meeting this guy?

Is it sad meeting online? Were both young 22 year olds. All comments appriciated thanks.

There is no stigma now attached to on line dating. It's a very, very common way to meet people. What are your alternatives? The church? errr No. Night Clubs (they're all drunk usually), Pubs? (Ditto). Your parents, if they are supportive, will appreciate that you have taken the time and effort to get to know this person by MSN before actually meeting. I believe YOU are the problem in that YOU and only you find it sad to be dating online. But in reality what is the difference where you met? Would it be any better to tell your parents you met at a night club. No. Be proud of what you have done. Obviously you like him and he does you too. So don't start with a lie. Tell your parents the truth and I'm sure they will not see it the way you do.

Reply:This is very controversial, some people are a bit embarrassed to let the world know they met online, others don't give a monkeys so I guess its all down to how comfortable you feel with it. If you get on well together then why would you want to stop seeing him. As for your parents, just tell them you met at (the first place you physically met him) then that wouldn't be a lie ... just not the whole truth! Also - be careful, it is still early days. Follow your gut instincts!

Reply:It's not sad at all to meet someone online. Increasingly more and more young people are finding love and making connections this way - hardly surprising when so many of us use the Internet nearly every day. I was in the same situation as you once, although it was the other way around, I was tempted to lie about how we met and he was prepared to tell people we met online. Don't take his lie too personally, he perhaps feels embarrassed (not of you!) of how you met because maybe he's never had an online relationship before and has never "believed" in them so to speak. That was the case with me, anyway - I was always the kind of person to sneer at online relationships until I made a great connection with a guy I got to know in a chat room. And here we are, two years later, still together and now proud and grateful of how we met.

I think you should tell your parents the truth. Think about it: won't they be much more concerned for you if they find out you were lying? You're effectively saying to them "it's something to be worried about" by not being honest (at least from their parental perspective). Don't give up on your relationship because of his lie - it might well just be out of shyness and worry that his parents will rain on his parade by saying online relationships aren't the real deal. Parents are from another generation and they don't always understand how things work today - my parents were worried I'd get hurt but now they're happy for me because they see how happy I am and how strong my relationship is.

I'm a male college student, and I have been considering online dating recently. There seems to be nobody in my area who meets my moral standards or shares my interests. Well.. okay, you're probably ~best~ off looking for christian dating sites, since you'll find many more people with your same ideals on there. I personally don't really like those big matching sites, since.. well it's quite hard to find anyone of substance there. But, you might be lucky, who knows. My advise is to find a handful of sites that appeal to you, and use all of them. (I was on about 7-8 when I found the love of my life.)

listen, the only way is to get more results for the money you're investing.

My advice is to cut down on the # of websites you are using to not only save you money, but to up your results and be more efficient.

I'm trying to get a sense of how my success with online dating compares to other guys. I decided to give online dating a try because I work with mostly older people as a Software Engineer. I don't really have many friends either, so it's tough to meet people.

I consider myself successful compared to others my age, I make around 80,000/year at 25 years old. I am very physically active and in excellent shape and quite muscular. I'm 6foot 190lbs, six pack, everything. Everything about myself is very good except I don't have an attractive face. I'm very average and my face has a naturally serious expression to it which causes some people to think I look scary.

So on to my success online: I joined eharmony for 5 months. Most women blocked communication with me upon viewing my profile. Some talked (maybe 10%). Out of the girls that talked, only 3 agreed to schedule a date with me. One of these girls cancelled, the other went on 2 dates before rejecting me, and the other went on one.

NO success with online dating. Is this normal? Does it mean I'm ugly?
Sounds like those women are as judgemental about your looks as you are about their weight....
Reply:I don't think it has anything to do with being better or worse than the women. A serious face, or being a little more heavy set are just characteristics that people find attractive or unattractive. So for example maybe some of those ladies you are rejecting were seen as beautiful by someone with different taste than you. Maybe if you come across as too serious and someone is looking for someone whose strength is their sense of humor they are going to look for a different profile. First of all i don't think you should take it personal that people that you don't even know don't want to be romantic with you. They don't mean it personal- i mean you don't when you reject people because of their body type right? You just know they are not right for you. Second, If you are the type of person that is seen as scary you may not make a great first impression (not sure cause i don't know you) but it would be easier to meet people not expecting to be romantic so they can get to know you first- like a coffee shop or something or a friends house...but since you don't have many friends that might be a good place to start- friends are very important...Older people are usually have children that might be your age or friends or family your age I would start by making friends there and see what happens.

Reply:I think you might want to try a service where you have more freedom contacting people (like Match.com).

Initially, my dating experience was similar to what you describe. I was successful in my 20s and I even have a tendency of giving off the appearance of being annoyed (even though I'm not). eHarmony was one of the first dating sites I tried and I experienced what you describe. A big part of my problem was this: I was meeting so few women that every time I actually got a date I stressed myself out over it, acted strange/stressed on the date, and then the woman never wanted to see me again.

I seriously doubt your looks are your problem. Also, it sounds like you're being hard on yourself by viewing a failed date as "rejection". Sometimes things just don't work out.

I would recommend looking into a few other dating services to try to generate more frequent dates. Since eHarmony "matches" people, the population of your town might be hurting you more than anything else. Also, I went on dates with people regardless of their weight. However, I believe it is important to be attracted to your partner so if you know you would never want a relationship someone overweight it might be more honest to continue doing what you are doing.

Reply:I get a little of everything that is unwanted. I have had porn invites, Viagra without prescription and dating services. I spam them for Yahoo but get them all the time. Try not to look at emails if you don't know the sender. Emails like that are loaded with viruses, trojans and malware. If you get a lot of spam and then get a window or pop up telling you to correct it, ignore that and don't click on it. If you react to it you will load your computer with virus. I got out of a serious relationship a few months ago. I was madly in love %26amp; it ended suddenly and without warning as he was cheating. But kind of on a different note, I just wanted to say...rebounds sometimes work! A lot of my past relationships, in fact some of the very best of them, could be considered rebounds. You just need to make sure you keep your wits about you and don't get so desperate that you go for a loser. But from the way you write and talk, I doubt that's going to be an issue for you.

I think they all charge you a little bit. There are all kinds of age ranges. Just be safe meet in public places if you don't like someone don't go out with them again. There are other reasons why you shouldn't be Christian and extremely conservative.

Anyway, I have no idea of the effectiveness of online dating, but I suggest you go to any Christian and extremely conservative activities near you. You may have to get far enough away from your college that the activity won't have many college students because they seem to be more less religious and more liberal in general.

I went to a good local school for the scholarship, but I've never been happy here and what's worse, it's in my backwater hometown.. Believe me, I have tried to date guys here; I've partied, I've been in sports and lots of groups, nothing has worked. I'm now 21 and extremely frustrated and lonely, and I will be stuck here for another semester because I had to take a medical leave of absence. Unfortunately it's too late to transfer.

I don't know why it's called online dating because dating happens offline...however, when getting to know people online for potential offline dates, here are some tips:

1. Represent yourself truthfully...don't act like someone you are not, don't put bogus info or pics in your profile

2. Don't give out any personal information (name, phone number, address, place of work) until you've gotten to know someone a bit...in fact, it's best not to divulge that info until after you've met and gotten an impression of them...

3. When you make arrangements to meet, do so in a public place...arrive and leave separately...don't have them pick you up or vice versa, don't let them follow you home...

4. If something seems off or too good to be true, let that be a red flag...there are plenty of honest and kewl people online, but there are also plenty who are not...use good judgement and don't believe everything you see or hear

I've known a number of couples who met online...some who've even married so the 'net is a great tool in meeting people and bringing friends and lovers together...just use it wisely and safely.

I joined an online dating service recently. I've been told that I'm an "8" on a scale from 1-10 but I'm not very photogenic. I saw a very attractive guy with an excellent profile so I emailed him. We virtually had the same things in common. He viewed my profile but he didn't respond back. I think he saw my picture and said "No Way!" Now, I feel silly for even joining the service. So:

I do not think online dating is good because you do not know if they're a nut-case deep inside. If you date them they will learn to much informaiton about you and could become a serious problem for you once it falls apart.

Okay, I've been corresponding with this guy online and telephone since April. We're talking about finally meeting and going out on a date, because we want this to work. He wants me to fly out to where he lives to see him, and he will pay for one way and I'll pay the other way. Online dating sites are a complete rip-off! Except for one site that I know of that is free (plentyoffish.com), all of the sites make you pay to be able to email someone (understandable), but the catch is that the person you are writing to has to be a paying "member" also. Similarly, on some sites, someone may write you, but unless you pay, you can't even see the profile of the person who has an interest in you, let alone make a reply. So unless you sign up for some high cost, automatic-renewal-trap contract, you can't respond to a person that has already paid to be able to speak to you. This situation basically makes online dating a complete joke. If a person pays a site to transmit their message to someone, then it should be made law that that message is delivered regardless of whether or not the receiver is a paying member. This practice is as assenine as having to pay to receive a call from someone...but at least cell phone providers are finally (slowly) coming around on that score

They are providing a service and should be paid for the service they provide. You have to weigh the pros with the cons. If the good outweighs the bad, then spend a little money. You would spend money to go to a ballgame or a movie, or go out to eat, and there is no guarantee your team will win, the movie will be good, or the food won't come back to haunt you later. I have a friend who is the founder of a new dating website which I won't disclose. She has 6 test accounts that she has created, and yes members can contact the test accounts w/ possible interest.

There was a man who wrote the same message to all the female test accounts, and who knows how many more member accounts. It's seems as though users are using online dating as a form of monopoly. Many members are speaking, and dating/hooking up w/ multiple ppl on multiple dating sites at once.

Okay everyone, I have been speaking with someone online from a dating site. We have been speaking back and forth with one another for a whole month and a couple of days (we speak for hours at a time 4-8hrs max). After 10 days of speaking with one another, he put his profile in “hidden” and I did so too. Just today, I was on the same dating site and saw that he has “unhidden” his profile and open in the market. Just to point out one thing, we have not met yet, but are planning too. We have spoke about everything and anything. We spoke regards to intimacy and shared our dislikes and likes. We have expressed out feelings towards one another and declared that we “realllly” like each other. We have not said that we “love” each other because we haven’t met. I’m just confused on where things are leading. Should I question him why he has unhidden his profile? Or what if he thinks I’m being over possessive.

(1)You can ask about where he lives and to send you a picture of himself

Girls that age, esp. in Asian culture where compartmentalized relationships are more common, often have the ridiculous idea boys who are smart and later will have great jobs will always suck up to them and pay for their things while they stay "distant" and data popular guys (IE guys and varsity sports teams with varsity jackets they only let their g/f's wear).

If you're careful and smart about who you date online, then how can it be so bad? Sure, people can lie online, but so can someone you met in real life. If you see your boyfriend on cam everyday and talk on the phone often, how is it different from meeting someone near you? Most people online are honest decent people. Almost everyone you know in real life uses some kind of messenger and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. People have fell in love online and when they met, they were just as in love. There is nothing wrong with dating online. Personally, I wouldn't use online dating as it smacks of desperation. Ladies are brought up to be wooed by men not pursue them and I suppose putting yourself forward like that seems a bit distasteful - like putting yourself on a supermarket shelf for people to look at and judge. You have already mentioned the safety factor - while I am sure you are a thoroughly decent chap there are nutters out there. There are many alternatives to online dating that I would be prepared to try before I would do that. The long hair thing wouldn't bother me though.

And, there are ads all over the web for dating services. I'm married, but if I weren't it would take a lot for me to turn to the web to find a date.

Even if you take precautions on where you meet someone, you still don't know who you are going to get. If you don't like who the person is in real life, you are potentially stuck in an uncomfortable situation.

About the long hair, not really sure why it is commonly on the turn off list, but it is kind of out of style. When I think of a guy with long hair, I'm thinking 80's hairbands or old school Michael Bolton. Not a really cool trend right now, but long haired guys may make a come back!

Their victims range of age has been known to be from children of 12(on average, some have been younger) to someone in their mid 40's. Some of these people don't care what gender their victims are, but primarily women are more common to be victims.

I'm from the US, but this kinds of people can be everywhere. Police reports in the my local newspaper(normally just stating who got DUI's and stuff) indicated the last person to be a victim of sexual assault was 48, female, she is a senior housing nurse. She was attacked in broad daylight, while the house's owner away at the local physician.

You just cant be too careful of who you meet online. even if they appear to be who they say they are.

It is better to date someone you have met in your own area. It's just easier.

as far as the long hair, I can only say that it's just the preferance of the ladies' profiles that you have gone through..

A couple of weeks ago I wanted to know people's thoughts about online dating. I was surprised at how many negative responses I received. With the emerging popularity of sites like Match.com and eHarmony, I'd assumed that it was much more of an acceptable thing to do. I dated one guy I met online about 3 years ago. It only lasted a month but he was a fairly nice, normal guy. We just weren't right for each other. I have several friends that have had success with it.

The thing is that I keep hearing stuff like "it's only for losers who can't get anybody" or "you'll get raped and murdered." But how is online dating any worse than dating any other way? I met both long-term boyfriends I've had in a bar when I was half-drunk. How is that better than meeting someone online?

My current circle of friends consists overwhelmingly of people in committed relationships. This provides me with an alternative.

Of course there are weirdos online, but there are weirdos in the "real world" too!

I agree with you. I don't see anything wrong with meeting someone through one of the dating sites. I think it has such a bad stigma because of all of the abductions, etc. that we hear about. The thing is, those are few and far between.

The older we get, the harder it is to meet good people. Meeting a guy at a bar is just stupid-Lord only knows what kind of creepy slime ball you can meet there. We can't really meet friends of friends because most of them are married or in a serious relationship. I think finding a potential match on-line is fab. You can weed out the ones you know you're not going to have anything in common with. Generally the men on match.com and eharmony are going to be a bit more genuine than in the "real world" because they are paying for the service. I have quite a few friends that have gone on dates from people they "matched" up with.

Also, I think another cool way is speed dating. It's getting more and more popular out here, and the premise of it is pretty cool. The first and lasting impression!

Something that helps when online dating is if you have a webcam, that way you can see that they aren't a child or some old person. You take your chances both ways. Lets say if I meet someone on a dating site. The person profile says their 19 years old. I then talk to them on the phone to comfirm their age, and they say their 19 years old, just like it said on their dating profile. What happens if I meet this person and their under 18 years old, can I get into any legal trouble for meeting someone under age? Could it be a cop and lie about their age, then arrest me for trying to meet someone online underage? If I do meet someone online, I plan on asking for ID identification, just to be sure im dating someone that is of age.

It wouldn't be a cop - they would be pretending to be under age, not legal age.

If you have doubts when you meet someone, don't have sex with them. Rather than demanding ID before sex, it might be more tactful to arrange dinner with friends, then say something like "This is Susan - can you believe she's actually 19?" - that way you have witnesses.

Don't have sex with someone you think MIGHT be under 18 - you are the one that will end up having to prove you really believed they were old enough for sex.

ok ive never thought of online dating but people suggested it too me. i always thought it was weird to meet someone online. Id like opinions cuase i have trouble with dating and just want to find a girl. im young 22 but i dont like to go party all the time. Actaully i havent for a while so i dont really see peopel i dont go out to bars. I work and pay a morgage for my house. I have been reunited with a man I dated 12 years ago. We met again through a online dating service. After a month of dating i requested he take down his dating profile and he said he would asap. I went online to check into things and notice his account is still active in fact he logged in yesterday. I sent him a email today letting him I was disappointed and it appears he doesnt take me seriously,I am still waiting for response. Well you should definitely follow through and give it a chance, just move at your own pace and if he really likes you he will slow down and adjust, and be sensitive to your needs. Communicate to him how you feel and make sure you are very clear about them to him.

You have to able to compromise if you are truly going to give someone a chance outside of your culture, if you are too stuck in your ways you may need to find someone just like you, but your making this choice for yourself, not based off logic.

If you explain to him everything you feel about this situation then im sure you will get your answer from him, that is satisfactory for you to move on. He won't think your nuts if you explain it to him. But you do need to give him a chance to make that commitment with you, by at least meeting you and spending some time with you. Asking someone to make that decision before any real chemistry has been made is kind of a hard throw.

Life to me is about being open and taking reasonable risk, and if you don't play, you can't win.

I have tried online dating and had moderate success. I am curious at the number of men (I presume it's the same way with the women too) that are on these site for years. I was checking out a site that I joined 3 years ago and haven't been on in about 2 and half years and there are so many of the same men on there and most of them have the same pictures and same bios and they have been active recently. I seen about 5 guys that I met almost 3 years ago and they are still on with the same ad. When I was doing online dating, I changed services a few times to increase my chance of meeting someone and felt that 6 months was long enough to stay on one site if I wasn't getting any response. These guys go on about how great they are and many of them rejected me for some superficial reason but here they are today still on the sites where I have met someone.

Here is the answer for you. Trust me on that, I know as an online dating veteran. I have been dating online for nearly ten years. I have been married twice since I first started, and divorced twice. In between my marriages I talked to some people who have been on dating sites (match.com in particular) since I was there the very first time around, and I met some people like that. They were there ten years ago. Then the same people were there seven years ago (after my first divorce). Then a year and a half ago (after my second divorce), the same people are still there. Anyhow, I think on-line dating is a good way to meet someone who is compatible. Yes; it's all about compatibility and you can compare it to sales. In sales they say, you have to work 100 contacts to make that one sale. To find that one person that matches what you are selling. Dating is kind of like that.

You also have to realize, there are weird people out there as well as those who are just not compatible. To weed them out, you have to go slow. By that I mean, email for a while and don't be impatient to get on the phone or meet. Through someones writing you can discover their education level, likes and dislikes, sincerity, financial standing, past history etc. etc. Then when everything falls into place and you find there is compatibility, you take it a step further.

You can try speed dating, taking classes or even just starting a conversation with someone at a library or cafe. Just continue to meet more people and your chances of finding Mr. Right will increase. Does anyone think that online dating is totally ineffective? I tried match.com and am giving up after being on it for less than a month. I talked extensively to three women and even met one of them. The other two simply stopped talking to me. WTF? What did I do? I don't think I came off badly. I think online dating is a lot like baseball in which the best players only get a hit like 30% of the time at bat. Where is a good place for a single man in his early 30's to meet women in person and hopefully form a relationship? Maybe God meant for me to be single, I don't know. But online dating seems to be a load of crap.

I know a few couples that have met on line and are now married and your parents. Like in real life you have to be very selective and the trick is to not chat too long. The person meets your criteria then meet right away for coffee that way you will eliminate people that sends fake pictures. Use common sense, if the person doesn't want to give you their home number or only are available on Sunday mornings it should ring a bell something is fishy.

You have to portray someone serious to be attracting someone serious and do not lower your standards ever.

Reply:There still does seem to be some sort of stigma against online dating, but I don't believe it pertains as much to the act of doing it as it does to admitting your participation to others.

Most of the people I know have participated in, are attempting to set up, or are currently involved in some facet of online dating. Still though, they hide their part in it as though it is somehow less acceptable. I'm not exactly sure why you would hide the fact that you do something that those you are talking do as well, but such is their way I suppose. Seems at times that the only people that talk with pride about their online dating rituals are the guys who proclaim their many sexual encounters with "these hot chicks from myspace". Too bad lies about cyberspace still sound like lies in person.

It's fairly safe to say that the idea that "predators" are waiting on the other end of every conversation has been thrown out the window by most computer literate people though (Sans underage MSNBC specials of course). While afraid to admit it, it seems most guys and girls aren't afraid to go just about anywhere to meet someone they have known online for as little as weeks or even days. When something like this happens, everyone blames the internet and online dating when foolish acts would have poor results no matter how they were setup. I wouldn't say it sets it back or creates more stigmas, but it does tend to leave a bitter taste in the mouths of those less informed.

Slowly...very slowly it seems...you find people here and there that have begun to embrace it. They are throwing away the adages that "you can't get a real feel for a person through a screen" or "only weirdos and creeps would date someone they haven't met", and admitting their involvement. With people marrying their online sweethearts and adults using sites as alternatives to smoky bars or expensive dates that lead nowhere, it just might lose the stigma about it being completely unsafe or foolish.

When you want to hook up with a profile, you then have to pay to become a member. Is this not unlike being a pimp? Here' the deal. Yes, I'm overweight but I'm working out at the gym %26amp; attending Weight Watchers weekly. I broke up with my ex bf 6 months ago and want to start dating again. No big deal I know, but then I start looking at the online dating sites.

What does a woman do when every guy's profile says they like every body type except the one I have ? I've looked the main stream sites and the others catering to tall people (like myself) and it's the same story all the time.

I have recently started trying online dating and exchanging messages with girls on sites like Friendster. It's resulted in a few dates, but I'm still out there looking for the right girl. The other day, I got a "smile" (through Friendster) from this girl. I usually like to set up a date right away (maybe after 2 message exchanges) - which is what I tried to do with her. But she kept replying through the messaging feature on Friendster, even though I gave her my personal email address. Then, she told me that some friends of hers had bad experiences meeting guys online, so she doesn't want to meet me in person, but wants to be a friend on friendster. I was like WTF!? Is she just being shy? Or am I doing something wrong by expecting girls to meet within 2 messages? I prefer to meet in person, ironically, for the same reason -- that I don't trust the online environment. Also, can anyone tell me other sites like Friendster where I can meet good looking, genuine girls?

Online dating - help me clear this confusion?
My friend tried out plentyoffish.com said that one worked pretty well. As for the confusion, I don't really see any here. I mean she was sort of being real with you that she only wanted to keep things on friendster, and that she wasn't really into meeting anyone other than just having chat buddies. I think and don't take this the wrong way, but your own unrealistic goal of meeting after just 2 messages, could be leading you to much disappointment in communicating with women online. I know you want a fast reaction from the other person and for them to be as pysched about meeting you so soon as you are about meeting them. But for alot of people they do not want to meet so early on like that until they really get to know the person. And I really don't see anything wrong with that. I mean what in the world can you tell about someone after just 2 messages? If you think you are saving yourself the hassle of any lies or whatever that could occur online by meeting so soon, then you are disappointing yourself yet again. Because in this technology driven world, real face to face communication still makes people nervous. So I think you would be missing out alot on who the person is because they have their gurad up and they aren't as talkative as on the computer. So I suggest getting to know the women a bit more than just two messages. I'm more than sure you won't regret it, good luck.

Reply:I wouldn't hold a 2-message-then-a-meeting rule to girls, everyone is different, and you never know who you could be missing out on. Some people do just want to be online friends, while others won't mind meeting. What you could do is take your time getting to know each individual, however many messages it takes. I would continue the online dating (from the sound of it, you're doing great!) but also try going out in real-life. You'll have a great time while you're out doing whatever, and you could meet tons of cute, funny, totally cool girls! Good luck, dude.
Reply:I signed on to Wealthymingle.com on Saturday, July 14 and recieved a wink from someone that same day....I emailed him, then we began talking by phone. We hit it off so much so that we were talking daily for 2-3 hours a pop, as he was out of town on business. By the time he returned from his trip, we had banked nearly 16 hours of phone conversation. I have a question for both guys and girls regarding online dating. To the guys, have any of you had any success with it who tried it? Met anyone or had replies back to your profile or reply messages?

To the girls who tried online dating, if a decent guy replies to your profile, he's college educated and shares many things in common with you, but you choose not to respond back, what would be the reasons for doing it?

I've been doing online dating for the past few months, I have profiles on 3 sites, I've replied to nearly 40 profiles and not a single response. Its getting very frustrating to a point where I'm close to throwing in the towel!

Is it common for people not to respond? Its pretty rude to ignore someone, can't even put the effort into sending a simple no thanks message! Ok. When you go on a date in real life, most of the time you're dating a stranger and you're trying to get to know a person. When dating online, you talk to them eaither in chat rooms or IM. Then you guys decided to meet up and go on an actual date. A lot of people think that dating online is eaither sick or taboo. I understand that some people lied online about eaither their age or what they look like. But what happened if what they say is the truth? Then when they went on dates and still chat online. They end up getting married and such. People asked them how they meet and they said "We met online." After they said that, people began to crinch. So is dating online a wrong thing to do? Even if it works out really well? Why is it such a taboo to date online?

What do you guys think of online dating?
Well, the internet is nothing more than access to another way of communication and getting to know people. However, it is also what is associated with the internet that people might be acting that it is taboo. News of liars, pedophiles, rapists, prostitutes, and a bunch of other sort of people bring a negative aura to the online experience. It probably isn't the taboo of online dating but rather the influence of what else is found online.

Besides, it is still relatively new compared to meeting someone at a bar, and the bar thing is well more acceptable. Just give it time.

Reply:I do not necessarily think that it is bad, but just as in person you must be very careful of who you decided to date, and make sure you know enough about that person to meet them. I also believe that the first meeting should be in a public place so that the other person has no idea where you live, and there are tons of people around to prevent injury then get to know each other from there, then you can become serious.

Reply:I met my husband online! At first, when people asked, I wouldn't tell them that, because it was "taboo," as you say. But I'm comfortable telling people now, because it's become more acceptable. I may have never met him, had it not been for the internet, so I'm proud of it now.

Dating online is fantastic, I think. You aren't going out with strangers and having an uncomfortable night. You can really get to know someone pretty well via e-mail, messenging, etc. Then, when you meet them, it's a much easier situation. People are much more honest and open online than in person, so you can know someone even better through dating online, I think.

Online dating - handling too much too soon?

I have been online dating on and off for about a year. I have a first date with someone this weekend and he is very new to online dating.

We spoke yesterday for the first time for an hour, which might have set the tone for this. Well, we spoke for 30 minutes, then he called back and spoke for another 30 minutes. I like this guy and am looking forward to meeting him, however, based on my past, if there is a TON of communication prior to meeting, well, when you do meet, it kind of fizzles. Now, he is looking to talk every day along with texting. We are not meeting until saturday. I could chalk this up to that he has not done online dating before.

I can appreciate getting to know someone, however, the "too much too soon" is happening. I have been guilty of it too, but I would rather not talk to this guy before we meet. Not playing a game, just don't need to know everything. How do I tell him that we don't really need to talk anymore, prior to meeting. Without being rude or cold?

personally ive done the online dating thing myself.....and i am aware of the too much too soon angle.....but honestly ive come to realize that you don't have to necessarily cut him off until you meet....

of course you can the whole avoiding thing before you see him all the "ill call you back" or "im busy call me tomorrow" and things like that....

but at the same time you also have the right to control the conversation....be secretive.....men love a good mystery....."i'd rather not speak about that yet" or "ill answer that when i see you" 15 minutes a day until you see him is fine....

keep it simple....how was your day, mine was good/bad/interesting/etc.......simple things like that to where you don't have to worry about the too much too soon thing....

then again you do have wishes, and he does have to respect those.....if he can't respect your wishes then he probably doesnt need to be affiliated with you in that matter anyhow....

one other thing i'd like to point out is that online dating works to an extent but its definately better to just meet people in social environments and do the dating thing there.....

Reply:Just be honest. Tell him that in your experience, it's better not to build up too much of an impression of the other person before meeting in person. If he sees that as rude or cold enough to be a dealbreaker, your long-term prospects probably aren't great any way.

I have been on an online dating site for almosta month now and I have gotten my mailbox flooded with over a hundred "winks" and emails but I have not responded to a single one. I have tried searching profiles and have not found anyone worth writing to. It's just awful! I am a 22 year old attractive college graduate with a good job. I am looking for someone who is educated, professsional, attractive, tall (becasue I am), and it just does not seem to be out there. I think this online dating thing was a huge mistake. I signed up because meeting guys in bars is only good if you are looking for quick hookups who won't ever call again and I work in a company full of married, divorced, and gay men.

Tell me if I'm wrong and I don't mean to offend anyone, but does it seem to anyone else that online dating would work best for unaducated, unattractive people looking for the same? What does a young single educated woman have to do to meet a guy!?? Online clearly isn't the answer. Thoughts???

I met a great guy online. We talk on the phone for hours and hours on end and our dates are magical. We both feel the chemistry that has existed over the past few weeks and have similar ideas of how a relationship should be. The problem is that in spite of our chemistry, I have noticed that he still logs into his online dating account almost every day. I found this out when I went online to deactivate mine. Since we are linked online, I can see his log in activity, and he still appears to be going online, presumably to view other profiles and meet other people.

Should I mention to him that this makes me uncomfortable? How would you handle this if your person of interest showed mutual feelings to your face but still dawdled around in the background. I should mention that neither of us has verbally stated that we are going to be exclusive, but the relationship seems to be headed that way. The only thing that makes me uncomfortable is that he still seems to be looking. I'm confused.

Just because the relationship seems headed towards exclusivity, that isn't the same as being there. It has only been a few weeks, and while things seem to be going good between you two the truth is that is a very short time period. I think he is going to keep his options open for awhile longer till you two reach that exclusive stage in your relationship. You have to remember, he also may have other girls he started getting to know before you two hooked up and you can't expect him to just end those until he is absolutely sure you two are a serious item.

The only way to find out is to talk to him. Neither of you have discussed your status, so it would be unfair to assume that "we've been dating for X weeks, therefore we are now exclusive." That you don't want to pressure him, but hopes he feels the same. Ask how he feels about it, and what he is ready for. Hopefully you can find a solution that makes both of you happy.

Please keep in mind that even if he isn't ready to commit YET, it doesn't mean he doesn't want to commit EVER, or that the doesn't care for you.. He may just need more time. (But don't wait forever, either - if he's not willing to be exclusive after four months of intense dating, it's time to cut your losses.)
Reply:Just be careful. Be bold enough to ask about the direction of the relationship, and don't mention what you saw online or he will think you are stalking him. Until you are exclusive, you don't have any say at all over what he does.
Reply:You are being cautious. I had this same problem when going to deactivate mine. I chose to confront him and discuss where we were going in this relationship and if he was still "looking". I was told he was not and he immediately deactivated his account. Some people like to keep checking for the sake of checking. Be honest, ask him why he is still "looking" and do tell him how you feel about it. If he continues to look, and does not deactivate it is a good indication that he is still looking to date others. Hello I have dated men that I have met through a couple of dating sites. As time goes on I find they really arent serious. Why do men post online personnals unless they are seeking a lasting relationship. The ones I have dated are usually about 45 minutes away and not local since my area doesnt have too many good single men or they dont use online services. I just dont understand why a person would pay for a dating service then see the one they are dating once a week. I undestand work and family obligations but I want a serious companion. The bad thing is that I am being told daily that I am the one they want to be with but I want more than words I want action and a long lasting partner that I can bound with. Isnt that what online dating is for?

Hi, I realise that online dating still has a lot of stigma attached - that's its for freaks, desperate people, it's unsafe, etc. But I have had a positive experience dating online (I met my current boyfriend through RSVP.com.au) . We've been together almost a year. I found online dating to be a lot easier than normal - you can search for exactly the kind of person you want. It's simpler and faster than hoping against hope that your soul mate happens to be in the bar you are at on any given night. Of course, there is always being safe - my man and I chatted for a couple of months before we met, and had our dates in public places, told other people where we were going etc. RSVP actually gives you safety guidelines for meeting people in the real world - so it was nice to have some tips. Turned out my man was just like I though he was from his profile ... we're very happy together. Does anyone else have some positive or negative online dating experiences they want to share?

Ive been a system admin for internet sites for as long as its been internet. Ive had alot of involvement in this subject long before there were even official sites for it.

One answer that is kindof fun is like this:

"You dont know if they are really young, or really blonde, or really have those stats, or really even female"

"Oh yeah? Have you been to a bar recently?"

Most of the people who put down online dating consider bars or dance clubs to be the mostly likely alternative. But give them a hard time about not being able to really chat with the person, and taking them home. Then when they start taking stuff off you find out that they arent really young, arent really blonde, dont really have those stats, and arent even female.

Sure people can fake things online. But over a period of time you tend to really get to know the person. Its not infallable but its not a total failure either, and real-world meetings arent always perfect either.

When I think of it, I think that online dating and meeting someone in person both are the same thing, except for the obvious. For example going into a club and getting someones numbers, etc. and talking to someone online are the same, except that online you don't talk to the person face to face.

In both cases, you don't really know who you're talking to. Like at a club, the person's number who you get could be a rapist, pedofile, ect. and same with online. So why is it that people completely disregard online dating??

I have a friend who started online dating. He is a good looking person but he doesn't seem to have any luck online dating. I keep telling him that you don't need online dating. My friend kinda gets bumped out sometimes because of this but I keep telling him that don't rely on online dating because sometimes it can be an illusion, the profiles can be fake, don't get bummed out.

Actually, finding people through dating websites is for people who can't find dates through regular channels, like bars and parties. It just gets your name out to a larger audience. He may as well try lots of different things to meet ladies besides just a dating web site. Sometimes they work and there are some attractive, genuine people out there. I know several people who met on eHarmony.com, fell in love, and got married. Does anyone else share this opinion of online dating. I am an attractive 22 year old woman who has been dating online for the past few months. I have been on quite a few dates and get quite a few emails. Out of ten emails I might respond to one. I just find that there is something missisng with online dating and am wondering if anyone else feels the same way. I feel that any guy I choose will be the same guy every girl chooses because of looks, success, whatever so when I go out with an attractive guy online I feel like I am his 11th date of the day and in competition with every other girl on the site. I know this might be true in real life dating too but I think this feeling is magnified with online dating. When I do go out with a guy more than once I get the feeling like it is only a matter of time before another online girl comes along. I am also getting the feeling that any attractive guy on there is only looking for quick sex.

The whole thing is just strange and I'm finding it difficult to really keep any lasting connections because I have no connection whatsoever to these guys in real life. The second one has both positive and negative aspects to it. The positive thing is that it opens the field to many candidates and meeting is easy and non-commital. The negative aspects are nearly the same.

In the end, you only have to be intelligently cautious and follow guidelines of safety that are available.

Back in the Dark Ages when I was shopping for a lifemate, my choices were somewhat limited but I got lucky nonetheless; we just celebrated twenty-nine years together.

You also have to be able to trust each other. I don't think you can fully build a relationship with someone, however, unless you are in close proximity. There is a different kind of chemistry when you can physically touch the person, or see expressions on their face, or have face to face conversation. It is fun to experiment with it, especially if it is someone you met on-line. Be careful and take the time to get to know them. Don't make any drastic decisions too soon.

Reply:I'm assuming you're an adult (over 18) if you're not, then no, don't meet him, if you are then : It's up to you whether to meet him or not, just make sure that you're doing because you really want to, don't let yourself be pressured to doing anything before you're ready. I've always thought meeting at a coffee shop was a good idea: you can finish your coffee and leave if he's a dud or linger longer if he's not and then decide if you want to move on to a longer lasting activity. I've dated so many interesting guys, lawyers, doctors, cops, musicians (one famous these days...yes online!!!), and they were completely normal. I do suggest not to do it in a small town, because I believe it's not as fun and the expectations are much higher. Here in New York, people are crazy whether or not you meet online. I suggest that you take your time and don't meet them immediately. Meet them like a friend , which will make it easier to let them down if it's not going to work out. You have to continue living an active life, party and meet people in variety of ways.

I have met a guy through a friendship site who i thought is cute by looking at his photo. We exchanged photos and started chatting. I noticed that we have a lot in common, except the fact that he has a girlfiend. We talked about that he mentioned that his relation with his girlfriend is not going to last and that he is interested in me and thinks i am cute and likes me. We shared a lot of talks together. I personally wouldn't do it but if you are considering, it all depends on the person who is on either end of the computer. I say first keep an ongoing causual communication line open...like email or IM for example without pressure of getting to know too much about eachother too fast and if that works, perhaps talk on the phone if both people agree. Have clear expectations set out and in the open and if you ever decide to meet, do so with a friend around or in a public place. Most times its difficult for people to do this but you never know..it may work for you. Just be very very careful and wise. For it. But, it would not be something I would normally do. But because of the type of job I have, I never could meet men. So, I opted to try the internet. You have to be careful, and spend time getting to know people. But it can be a lot of fun meeting new people. I did end up meeting my current husband through Match.com and we are both very very happy that we were able to meet this way. I would definitely be "for" it. But it should be used with some intelligence when meeting people for the first time. When I say this, it is because a certain amount of men and women are what I would call "professional daters". They aren't really in it for a relationship but just to date/intimacy without strings attached. So, one has to find out what other people are looking for and see if it matches what you want too.

Also, know their politics / religion / ethics / morals / thoughts / feelings, before you say YES or NO to online dating. Though religion and politics are the so-called FORBIDDEN subjects, you must know about them!

I'd suggest not looking for an online relationship. When I got into one, I hadn't planned it AT ALL! I was looking for someone close to me that I had feelings for. It just happened! And it was great when it lasted, but I knew it just would NEVER work, sadly.

Physical attraction ("spark") is essential in a budding relationship.
